The abundance of gold allowed the United States Government to take a historic and important decision that is to mint gold coins with higher denomination. After passing the Gold Dollar Bill in 1849, US Mint first minted two pattern coins of $20 Double Eagle of which one rests in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Longacre was given the responsibility of designs for the coin, which are elegant and have high collectible value.
